Character History
Character History:
• emerson's history
• series overview
Canon Example:
• crocodile on the sandbank
• the curse of the pharaohs
Character Motivation:
• first and foremost, emerson is driven by a thirst for knowledge and maintaining history. preserving the past is something that he thrives on, some would call him an advocate of careful methods of excavation and research. he's gone as far to create his own method of ensuring that paint from stone tablets will not be destroyed with a mixture of water and tapioca ( it was made better by his wife later. ) emerson has a blinding sense of duty when it comes to matters of his field of study. he is well known around egypt as a violent man with a hair trigger temper and absolutely deals in no nonsense when it comes to protecting any and all finds from any and all archaeological digs. he hates bureaucracy and has a hate/hate relationship with the british museum — no, that isn't written incorrectly as emerson has less than zero respect for them, their findings and their methods. seeing things in disarray tends to put him into a blind rage; so much so that in later novelizations he misses seeing feet prominently sticking out from beneath the fabric of a curtain where the very man he was enraged at was hiding due to items being unpacked and stocked incorrectly in his office. this goes to show how much he properly cares about things being well taken care of — he has a habit of stating that he'll wring necks and the like toward anyone with the audacity to mistreat antiquities. it's a promise, not a threat and he's done so in the past.
Personality:
• it took a great deal of extensive schooling for one radcliffe emerson to get where he is today in his life. upon graduation, he has become a professor of egyptology and has several other degrees to his name. he is a fellow of the royal society, a fellow of the royal geographic society and a member of the american philosophical society to name a few of his other "titles" in association with the archaeological degrees he uses to employ himself. a professor, he is typically addressed as such or simply by his familial name as he has issues with his first name. "radcliffe" is not something he tends to introduce himself by nor will he unless pushed. he's an amalgamation of book and street smarts: obviously his grades and studies show his high level of intelligence, dilligence and ability but emerson would scoff at being called only a british scholar and there are a few examples of this sort of street wits he has about him.
• he has been shown to have patience to a certain degree with the natives of egypt and thanks to his fluency in arabic, he is capable of holding conversations with them as well as using his intelligence and wit when necessary to avoid confrontations ( shocking, i know ) and prove that simply speaking can work in certain instances. one of said situations takes place during his initial stint with meeting amelia peabody and the mystery that wafted around themselves and their small, ragtag group of friends and their hired men. he approached the mayor of the small village they had been digging near in order to try and create some semblance of peace when rumours of a mummy coming to life had sprung up. he had been all but winning the argument until a threat had been made unto amelia ( and evelyn's ) person when his temper took over. i use this as an example because it's thanks to his repertoire with the natives that had him able to get as far as he did before succumbing to his rage and that was only to defend the women.
• another one of said situations was his confessing to amelia that he had been onto lucas ellesmere for some few days before he had shown his true colours. it was thanks to his conversations ( again, in arabic ) with the reis from amelia's dahabeeyah, reis hassan. through conversation and speculation, he was able to correctly piece together that lucas was not only behind fake mummy but the disappearance of amelia's dragoman, michael. it turned out that he had been correct about lord ellesmere being behind the attacks in his attempt to force emerson's future sister-in-law into being his bride. one last example albeit certainly not the last one that could be named, took place when he returned to egypt after a stint in teaching so that his wife could give birth and raise their son into being an amiable toddler. he was heading to their dig site and had a run in with the local holy man, the imam. emerson maintained ( truthful or not ) that religious leaders are all showmen and he wasn't wrong with this one in particular. he showed him up by declaring how nice it was of said imam to come and bless the dig site and when he ( the imam ) was belligerently retorting about profaning the tombs, emerson had no qualms with exclaiming the thieves of gurneh did more profane rustling about in the tombs by stealing from them than someone like himself whom was trying to protect them. this illicits a response from the villagers of surprise and approval — he was only too thrilled to have shut down the imam before he could have done any harm to the hired men by spooking them with ridiculous takes of afreets and ghosts.
• emerson is short tempered and violent, known to be sharp with his tongue when and when not warranted. men and women alike have been on the receiving end of his bitterness although he does make a point to attempt being more polite to the fair sex. sometimes, however, he can't be all that mindful depending on the situation he finds himself within because he has a tendency to throw a punch first and think later. he uses a rather colourful diction no matter which language he's speaking; it's earned him the title of "abu shitaim" which translates to the father of curses thanks to his use of language that would make a sailor blush. even amelia peabody-emerson herself has a tendency to look away and not repeat the things he dares to utter. his "attack first" way of thinking is generally aimed petty criminals and crooks although he isn't against thrusting a fist into the jaw of someone he simply considers deserving of the act. emerson is well known for grabbing men by the collars of their shirts, throats and other areas of their bodies to stop them in their tracks, shake them or otherwise subdue them for any number of reasons. it does get him into trouble and according to even his wife, it's earned him a lot of persons in egypt that would be ready ( and willing ) to kill him. in emerson's opinion, it's well worth it.
• in spite of his flaws, emerson is a familial man with a great tenderness for his loved ones. beneath all the boorish layers of his person, there's a sentimentality that he rarely allows to be seen by persons other than close friends and family members. his genteel temperament isn't reserved only for the members of his family but he isn't of the nature to reveal it so openly. still, people have sought him out instinctively whilst in trouble thanks to his softer nature. one such time was in his past, well before meeting his wife, during one of his earlier jobs in egypt. the young daughter of a man working with him called aziza had stolen away into his ( emerson's ) tent one night. bloodied and beaten, she proceeded to tell emerson her tale of pitiable woe: she had been promised to be wed, sold by her father, but she was beautiful and had had her innocence stolen from her. when her father found out about it, he was enraged at losing the money promised and took to her with a club to salvage the so-called family honor. with both her arms broken from the savagery, emerson did his best to make her comfortable and promised to return with aid. he fled to find assistance but returned to find aziza dead with her father, habib, fleeing from his tent. the guilt of his failure weighs heavily on him and a chance meeting with habib at a later date only causes him to revisit his anger toward the man. still, this is a prime example of how his softness is hidden but traceable to others seeking it out since he had only ever really been kind to the girl a few times in passing but she had chosen him to turn to for assistance.
• arguably, he is the tender one between his wife and himself but he would deny it publicly and in fact has taken to readily changing the subject whenever his affections are brought up. he is a kind and loving father to his son, lowering himself to playing horsie and the like with him. he likes to read his manuscripts to his young boy and even argues facts with him; and yet he is the sort of person to grow extremely tired and bored with domesticity. he even grew to dislike the repetitive nature of his teaching position whilst in britain much preferring the wild and unruly sands of egypt as well as the unknown of archaeological work. the mystery surrounding the insides of tombs is what gives him joie de vivre, he would do anything to be beneath the earth, seeking out new discoveries and learning new things about old history.
Canon Strength/Weaknesses:
• obviously given his hair trigger temper, at least, some of his strengths can be considered weaknesses. some of the previously mentioned flaws in his personality section are pluses in certain situations, though!
[strengths]
• despite the temper that flares up at all times, especially during work hours, emerson instills a kind of loyalty in the natives he hires as his hands for archaeological works. normally it takes several hours for the ceremony to take place in the house of the sheikh but it took emerson only twenty minutes to round up his men. true, the men had abandoned them in amarna but it was because of a mummy that was meandering about. with the help of the hire men's leader, abdullah, that crime was solved. abdullah and the men later went on to remain loyal to emerson and his family. upon his return they were only too eager to go back to working for him. loyalty is tested for these men when frightening things happen that are, typically, considered to be the works of spooks and afreets. emerson is not a superstitious person nor does he allow his crew members to be if he can help it. in spite of numerous things going awry and wrong, the men continued to work in the tomb even with the imam shouting about ghosts and the like happening all around them.
• emerson likes to consider himself a man of action and he has a lot of said action to back up that self description. several times over he has put himself in the harm's way to protect the person's that he loves. in fact, it's almost comical the amount of times that he's getting injured while on the job and off. he's put himself directly in between amelia and falling rocks more than once, charged bullheaded in at a man with a gun firing at himself ( and amelia, ) he's caught a falling dagger with his bare hands that left him with gashed palms, nearly crushed to death by a boulder, throttled with a small carving of akhenaton in the temple, etc. the list is on-going and ever growing. he is the first to jump into action at the sound of a cry for help and is often one of the first ( if not first ) persons to arrive on scene where something malicious has taken place. in example, hassan was tragically killed and it was emerson whom leapt out his bedroom window to hurry out to be with the man rather than wait for someone more properly suitable to be with him. he is a fast thinker as well given some of the aforementioned situations involved quick thinking; such as coming up with a plan for peabody to distract lucas so the gunfire would be aimed elsewhere when lunging for the armed man and so on. it's safe to say that emerson is definitely a man of action indeed.
[weaknesses]
• remember how we mentioned that some strengths could be considered weaknesses? let us return to that whole temper thing, shall we? emerson would be hard pressed to hide his temper. in fact, he does try now and then to put on a polite air but unless his wife is around, he doesn't always manage it and even then, amelia doesn't exactly have a leash on the man. he is opinionated and doesn't mind sharing said opinions with anyone whom will listen but more than that, he is known to go into blind rages when he gets into a bad mood. most notably, he gets into tantrums when the care of antiquities is questionable. as a man with a deep connection to history, emerson likes to ensure that things are properly stored and properly retrieved from dig sites to ensure that history is not lost. he's been known to have fits of rage aimed toward the british museum and its curators, managers and other staff members because of their failures to make sure things are well protected. he's even gotten so blind with rage that he'd failed to spot the very man he was spewing hate for hiding behind a curtain in his own office whilst looking for him. antiquities are not the only things that emerson is inclined to protect, though. his family and friends are also under the radar for persons to protect, he's kept amelia safe several times over and has protected both his brother, walter and his wife, evelyn as well. he has high morals that cause him to instinctively protect women in particular, too, although he isn't one to fall for the wiles of women whom would use "the vapors" to control the whims of men. in amarna, mohammed made a remark about "the mummy" disliking the strangers ( re: walter, lucas and emerson ) but made a point to say that the so-called mummy liked the english women ( evelyn and amelia. ) this caused emerson to fail in his attempt to talk to the mayor and caused him to grab mohammed by the throat without putting much thought in it. his temper and fierce need to protect can definitely be seen as a strength but it's also a weakness and should be listed as such.
Apprentice Sorcerer Application
Class:
• he has a leadership personality as shown with the loyalty he instills in the men he hires, the woman he married and the friends he surrounds himself with. he may not be properly trained but he is definitely the sort of person to leap to the defense of others however he isn't a follower. he very much prefers to be in charge of things and while he can take an order or two ( from his wife ) he isn't the sort to bend to the wills of others. he commands respect from abdullah, hassan and others like his own brother, walter, his son ramses and yes, even his wife amelia. so in my opinion, i believe that emerson would be best suited as a hero.
Weapon:
• emerson doesn't have a weapon that he uses in the series, he tends to rely on his hands. he will continue to do so herein but he'd be ever so pleased to make use of an ancient egyptian blunted mace. if that's unacceptable, he has no qualms with just locating a club to go back to his caveman roots and strike foes that way.

First Person Sample:
( it had been a long day of dealing with people and he wasn't interested in being among the living any longer. people were so much easier to deal with when they were dead and wrapped inside a sarcophagus. he was still trying to wrap his mind around what he had been told by the bearded wizard when he went up to his room. said room was perfectly fine for him, he didn't care about the frivolities that were involved with expensive tastes like some others he knew. a bed was all he needed, really. upon opening the door, though, he grimaced. who the devil was this person he was sharing chambers with? not his wife, that's whom. he bristled, slamming the door shut with such anger that the walls shook when it closed. )
What in the name of all things Holy is going on here!? Peabody! ( the woman had to have been around somewhere. he stamped a foot. there was no way he was going to share a bedroom with some other chump when his wife was among the persons here. ) Peabody!! Whom do I speak to about this obvious mistake! Merlin! Roommates be damned, where the hell is my wife!
